Northern Lights in Ontario

Northern Lights

Having the opportunity to see one of Northern Ontario's most beautiful spectacle is something most people can only dream of. In Northern Ontario, we are so lucky to catch a glimpse of the not so frequent Northern Lights. During September, October and throughout the winter months, you have a higher chance of catching the sun’s charged particles. During this time of year, there is a shortage of sunlight, and the darkness is the ideal time to see the colorful array of the Aurora Borealis. You can spot just about every color in the spectrum when the Northern sky is perfectly clear.

Fried Fish: Pan

Fried Fish: Pan

A Northern Ontario classic. I’m sure at least one member of each family in this province has their own special fried fish recipe. Here’s mine!

4-6 fish filets of your choosing
Vegetable oil
½ cup flour
2 tbsp cornstarch
¼ cup cornmeal
¼ cup bread crumbs
1 tsp mustard powder
1 tsp chili powder
2 eggs

First step to fried fish, mix your flour and cornstarch. Season generously with salt and pepper
Next, mix cornmeal and bread crumbs with seasonings and salt and pepper
Whisk eggs, add a splash of water to thin.
Heat your pan over medium heat with ¼ inch of oil

This will be a three step breading process.
Start with the flour, then dip in eggs, finally coat with cornmeal mixture.
Place fish in frying pan, cook until golden brown on both sides.

Put your own spin on the Fried Fish classic, and enjoy!

Cleaning Fish

Cleaning fish

For the most part, all edible sought after fish in the North Channel is considered a “Round fish”. This means they have two whole filets on either side of their rib cage. Unlike their counterpart, the “Flat fish” which has 4 filets, two on either side of their top spine, and two on either side of their belly. Different, commonly known species of round fish include bass, tuna, salmon and trout. The prime species of flat fish include flounder, sole and halibut. At Lake Lauzon Resort we have set up an ideal area for cleaning fish right near the lake. This ensures that as you're cleaning fish, you'll have all necessary amenities right near by. A large industrial sink, and 4 feet of stainless steel fastened with a laminated wood cutting board. With this type of set up, all you need is the right tools and guidelines and you'll be a fish cleaning master!  Cleaning fish is certainly not rocket science, but round fish is much easier to clean and filet. All it takes is a sharp blade, insert it just underneath the top of the tail, and follow along the ribs til you hit the gills. This will ensure you get the most amount of meat from the body, and you get to avoid the mess of opening the belly. Now, if you have the gusto to clean the belly out, you will be left with the gift of the fish bones & head. May sound gross, but with this “trim” you can make the tastiest fish stock. Recipe for a standard, yet amazing stock is to follow! Keep fishing my friends! Hoping to see you by Lake Lauzon Resort this summer!

Excited to get on the Lake

If you are interested in getting out on the lake this summer Lake Lauzon Resort offers all of the equipment rentals one needs for a day out on the lake. This writer's toy of choice is a kayak, a recreational touring kayak is a quick way to get out on the open water. With plenty of storage space, it is a great choice for anything from shorts jaunts to longer paddling day-trips. Circling the island just west of the resort is a popular route, but as Lake Lauzon is no small lake, the possibilities for longer trips are endless. The more adventurous may organize a multi-day camping trip down Lake Lauzon and back along the North Shore of Lake Huron. This is a great way to spend a warm spring or summer day at Lake Lauzon.

My Favourite Things #4

Of all my favourite things at Lake Lauzon Resort, this one is the most relaxing. There is nothing like jumping off the dock and swimming out to Lake Lauzon Resort's large floating raft. When you're out there it feels like you are miles away, even though you're just a short swim to shore. If you're not alone, it's a great place for chatting, games and cannon balls off the dock. Being out on the raft is a great way to spend a sunny summer afternoon.

Isn’t this the truth…

This can't be more than true. Don't you agree?

Life at the lake represents all that is good in life. Good weather, friends and family, the great outdoors. Being close to the water brings about so much fun! Boating, fishing, swimming or just sitting on the dock.

My Favourite Things #2

There is so much that I love about being at Lake Lauzon Resort. I posted recently, my most favourite thing about being at the Resort, sitting at the dock on the water. What a lovely idea that has been getting me through the winter. The second of my most favourite things is getting an icecream.

The icecream served at Lake Lauzon Resort is the best made in Northern Ontario. Farquhar's Dairy has amazing hard icecream. I love to go the icecream shack, grab a scoop (or two) and enjoy it while sitting on the resort lawn watching the water. It is a great way to cool off, refuel and enjoy the summer sun. Bring on the warm weather!

My Favourite Things #1

From relaxing on the dock to taking a day trip to the vast Lake Huron, there are countless ways to spend your summer days at Lake Lauzon Resort.

The first thing that comes to mind when enjoying my time at Lake Lauzon Resort is sitting on the dock. There is nothing like sitting on the lake with a refreshing drink with nothing to do but dip your feet in the water. There is truly nothing like it. At Lake Lauzon Resort we have several beautiful new floating docks, good for, well, docking, sitting, sunbathing, visiting or watching the wonderful Lake Lauzon sunset. There are few simple things in the world that bring me so much happiness.
